What separates good organizations from bad organizations?
Organizations come in all shapes and sizes naturally there is no one size fits answer. However, there are guidelines for how good organizations approach solving for what keeps them up at night. What I call premier organizations, have a two-pronged planning approach. They excel in planning strategic initiatives and also in executing tactical initiatives. This means the leadership takes time to hold rigorous planning sessions and the members in the organizational have the proper training to capably execute those plans.
Proper strategic planning focuses on growing the chapter and keeping the organization's mission statement and vision alive. These manifest themselves in the chapter's S.M.A.R.T. goals, roadmap, and live tracking of event outcomes. There is also a focus on recruiting and retention by having strong branding and a system to reward volunteers.
Tactical operations such as forming special committees, documenting tribal knowledge, and holding meetings & events are the day-to-day execution of the strategy. Leaders often find it challenging to marry the long-term strategic planning with the tactical actions. Solving for this unbalanced equation by creating chapter assets is great first step to turning around your chapter.
Each leader must contemplate what are her current chapter's assets and what is missing. For example, a student run organization may have excellent member resume books for sponsors but an alumni/recruiter point of contact book would really solidify the chapter's offering to its members.
